Runningco.com says: In 2005, Washington Township, featuring a group with no proven frontrunner but a tight pack, finished as South Jersey’s second-best team. Two years later, the Minutemen have a similar team makeup. And while this 2007 team isn’t quite at the level of the 2005 team, its small five-man spread will put them in contention to win meets. Returning for coach Bill Albertson this fall is the team’s top five from last season – seniors Pat Carpenter, Alex Clemson and Chris Kelly and juniors Xavier Fraction and Tim Carey. Among these five, the No. 1 spot may rotate from week to week (one runner to keep an eye on is Fraction, a 4:25 miler during the spring), but you can bank on them all finishing very close to each other. At last year’s South Jersey Group 4 sectionals, Township had a ridiculous five-man spread of 13 seconds. If this group can maintain a spread even close to the one it displayed at sectionals last year, watch out. If this team’s top five can stay together, the Minutemen will be a team to worry about at sectionals. A trip to the Meet of Champions out of brutal Group 4 is also a possibility.
