Runningco.com says: With five of its top seven back, led by standout senior Alex Yersak, Cherokee begins the season as the team to beat in South Jersey. What Yersak (Holmdel PR of 16:22) gives the Chiefs is an automatic high finish in every race. Along with Yersak, a lot will also be expected of junior Chris Applegate, who is coming off a great sophomore cross season. Between Yersak and Applegate, Cherokee has arguably the best 1-2 in South Jersey. After Yersak and Applegate, the top five looks like it will be senior Kevin Schickling, sophomore Steve Burkholder and junior Sean Hartnett. According to coach Steve Shaklee, there is a talented group of at least six guys vying for the final two spots. What you can expect from this year’s team is a solid top five which will only get better as the season progress. A sectional title, a top-three finish at the Group 4 state meet and a top-five finish at the Meet of Champions is definitely within reach for this team.
