Camden Catholic senior Kevin McDonnell, one of South Jersey’s top individuals who hasn’t raced since the Camden County Championships on Oct. 18 due to a stress fracture in his left foot, is still up in the air as to whether he’ll race at Saturday’s Non-Public A state group championships, Irish assistant coach Ralph Harris said Thursday night.
McDonnell, who has been wearing a protective boot on his injured foot for about the last two weeks, visited his doctor on Wednesday, according to Harris.
“The doctor told him the foot wasn’t totally healed yet,” Harris said. “The doctor said he could run if he wanted to, but that by running, he could also further aggravate it.”
It’s because McDonnell wasn’t given full clearance that a tough decision is left to be made.
As of Thursday, according to Harris, McDonnell hasn’t run on the foot yet. Since being fitted with the boot, McDonnell has been working out in the pool and riding a stationary bike.
“At this point, the decision is up to him and his parents,” Harris said. “He probably won’t decide if he’s going to race until Saturday morning.”
Prior to getting injured, McDonnell was unbeaten in South Jersey races as he collected three individual victories. His wins came at the Cherokee Challenge (senior race), South Jersey Open (Division 2 race) and Camden County Championships. |
